Untitled Number 92
As if Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Number 92 is ingrained in my brain, reminding me never to look down on a woman as a photographer or otherwise, I tend to avoid downward-looking angles when photographing women if I sense any vulnerability in that positional relationship.
But this time, I believe Kat’s energy and power just convinced me to go for it. And being an aerial dancer, she makes climbing the handrail look almost effortless. She does it with such determination that, to me, it feels as if, in a matter of a second or two, she might take over the position of the photographer on the steps above! So, I hope I have got it right.
This was also one of those shots where I just went for it instinctively, mostly because of the purity of the straight-on angle and the way Kat occupied the space with such presence. But then look at the parked bicycle and the boat on the River Lee Navigation. Kat shines beautifully. The image tells something about the place too.
What else do I want from photographing a kind-hearted woman whose path has crossed with mine, as a full-time academic with a never-ending flow of emails and online meetings?
